Miles Merritt, Director & Co-Producer with Musician Jerry Lawson
“The Jerry Lawson Story – Just a Mortal Man,” a documentary project by two local filmmakers, Miles Merritt and Gail Kempler, delves into the inspiring and challenging life of the “King of A Cappella,” Jerry Lawson.
Cited as an inspiration for the resurgence of a cappella in pop music today, Jerry was the original lead singer and arranger of the legendary a cappella group The Persuasions for 40 years. He toured the world with celebrities such as Liza Minnelli, Ray Charles, BB King, Joni Mitchell and more — and sang with Rod Stewart at a benefit for Hurricane Katrina. With The Persuasions, Jerry recorded 22 albums, performed for the Kennedy family, and sang with the Seattle Symphony and on college campuses across the country.
The filmmakers have launched an Indiegogo campaign to reach their goal of $35,000 to cover the costs of obtaining licensing rights, editing, and post-production fees. “We are excited to bring the story of Jerry Lawson to the screen,” shared co-filmmaker Gail Kempler. “We hope the community will support this project by donating to NMCF through our Indiegogo campaign.”
