On Saturday, December 9, 2017, the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) celebrated its 30th Annual Christmas party for the inmate’s children and families, which was funded through private donors, MDC employees, and local businesses.

The success of such a huge undertaking is best measured in the responses received from the families themselves. As one family member expressed to the Albuquerque Journal, “‘We’re just doing what we can to try and keep the holidays somewhat joyful and positive,’ she said, tears streaming down her cheeks as she spoke in the kitchen off the center’s main room. ‘Holidays are tough, because we have traditions in our family and missing that person that’s always there, my son, it’s hard. It’s like you’re trying to do what you normally do, but there’s a piece missing.'” You can continue reading the Albuquerque Journal’s full coverage of the event here.
