Boaters launch onto the Rio Chama for familiar reasons: the cool pull of the current, the sweep of canyon walls, and the chance to spend a day immersed in one of New Mexico’s treasured landscapes. This season, however, some participants will carry one more item alongside their paddles and dry bags—a water-sampling kit.
At designated points along the river, participating boaters will collect sample pairs of water and macroinvertebrates while they are already out enjoying the Rio Chama. Each sample offers a snapshot of conditions on that stretch of river. Together, those snapshots can help researchers examine how water characteristics, sediment, flow management, and aquatic insect communities relate to one another below El Vado Dam.
For participating boaters, the task is modest. For New Mexico Wild, a current NMCF grantee, the combined observations can add practical, place-based information to years of water-quality and aquatic-insect monitoring along the river’s wild and scenic reach. Earlier monitoring has documented generally good water quality and a robust aquatic-insect community, while also identifying declines that merit closer study. This project is designed to deepen understanding of how operations at El Vado Dam may be influencing the downstream ecosystem.

That makes every sample part of something larger. As citizen scientists, participants are not standing outside the landscape and studying it from afar. They are moving through it, paying closer attention to the water that carries their boats, supports aquatic life, and connects communities downstream. Recreation becomes a doorway to stewardship—and a day on the river becomes an opportunity to help care for its future.
This is the kind of locally led work the Foundation seeks to advance through Thriving Environments. The funding priority invests in the livability and natural conditions that allow people, animals, and plants to thrive, with focus areas that include small freshwater ecosystems, local land regeneration, and outdoor recreation access. New Mexico Wild’s project brings those aims together: community members participate in research, scientists gain information that can support future decisions, and the river remains both a place to learn from and a place to love.
The findings can help inform future reservoir management and flow releases as water managers work to meet human needs while responding to changing downstream environmental conditions. For a boater holding a sample bottle, that future can feel wonderfully immediate: stewardship is not only something experts do. It is something community members can practice, one careful observation—and one day on the Rio Chama—at a time.
