What guides our work at the New Mexico Community Foundation is that the people closest to the challenges are also closest to the solutions. Across rural towns, mountain villages, acequia associations, nonprofit offices, kitchen tables, classrooms, and community gathering places, New Mexicans are building the future they want for the places they call home.
As Director of Advancement & Communications, I have the privilege of helping tell those stories. I also come to this work personally. I have spent much of my life and career living and working in rural communities, so I understand that rural strength is rooted in relationships, trust, resourcefulness, and a deep commitment to place.
That spirit is at the heart of Thriving New Mexico, our commitment to expanding the ability and opportunity for New Mexicans to thrive on their own terms. Through Thriving Rural, Thriving Environments, and Thriving Indigenous, we focus resources on the interconnected conditions that shape quality of life, community vitality, and long-term resilience.
This month, we invite you to look at our work through the lens of Thriving Rural. Rural communities are the heart of New Mexico. They carry deep histories, strong relationships, and a spirit of care that is easy to feel when neighbors gather to solve a problem, support a family, protect a landscape, or keep a tradition alive.
Through Thriving Rural, NMCF invests in community-driven planning and upstream projects that strengthen rural places, with a focus on healthy food access, physical activity, social connections, and local livability. These may sound like program areas, but in practice they are deeply human: a child having fresh food close to home, an elder having safe places to walk, a family feeling connected to neighbors, and a local organization having the support to turn an idea into lasting change.
In this newsletter, you will meet examples of that work, including the Tri-County Fund, a Land of Enchantment Community Fund, and grantees whose efforts reflect the creativity and commitment found across rural New Mexico. Their stories remind us that impact is not abstract. It lives in relationships, trusted local leadership, and the steady work of people who care deeply about where they live.
