As a Donor Advised Fundholder at New Mexico Community Foundation (NMCF), Stuart Bluestone has found a meaningful way to support the causes and communities that matter most to him. His giving reflects a lifelong commitment to justice, environments and the well-being of people across New Mexico.

“I feel fortunate to be in a position to have a Donor Advised Fund to be able to assist worthy nonprofit organizations,” Stuart said. “My parents started such a fund and encouraged my brother, sister and me to continue their mission of supporting worthy causes.”

After more than 42 years in New Mexico, Stuart’s affection for the state has only deepened. He values NMCF’s statewide reach and its ability to connect donor generosity with community-driven solutions in both urban and rural places. “When I learned about the New Mexico Community Foundation, I felt it would be a good fit for my Charitable Fund as their focus is statewide,” he said.

Stuart’s philanthropy spans many areas, including democracy, justice, immigrant rights, health care, education, music and cultural heritage. Environmental advocacy is also central to his giving.

That commitment connects closely with NMCF’s Thriving New Mexico priorities, including Thriving Environments. Healthy land, water and ecosystems are essential to the long-term livability of rural communities. Through Thriving Environments, NMCF prioritizes local eco-regeneration efforts that care for New Mexico’s delicate natural ecology.

For fundholders like Stuart, a Donor Advised Fund offers both flexibility and focus: the ability to support a wide range of causes while remaining grounded in personal values. “I know that I am interested in a lot of issues, and I wish I could support more worthy causes and donate more than I do,” Stuart said. “But with the help of the good staff at the New Mexico Community Foundation, I feel I am able to provide some needed assistance in my own small way to a lot of good nonprofits, primarily in New Mexico but also around the country and the world.”

Stuart’s story is a reminder that philanthropy can meet the moment while also looking ahead. By supporting our state’s environments and rural vitality, donors can help protect the places New Mexicans cherish and strengthen the communities that call those places home.
